Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
Beetlejuice is back, and this time, Beetlejuice packaging is everywhere. It’s not just about death—it’s about the fashion. For those of us who’ve cherished Beetlejuice since the original hit theaters 36 years ago, this collab would be to die for.
A lot of the Beetlejuice packaging is aimed at younger audiences even though we were the ones that loved it the first time around and are excited to revisit it as adults. So, we decided to create the packaging collab we want to see, Beetlejuice x Rick Owens.
This isn’t just another nod to nostalgia; it’s the perfect blend of eerie elegance and gothic glam, designed for the fans who’ve been waiting their entire lives for a collab that truly speaks their language.
Because who wouldn’t want to channel their inner spirit and dress for the afterlife?
Haunting Inspirations
Drawing inspiration from Rick Owens’ DRKSHDW collection and his striking Paris Fashion Week Fall 2010 looks, I wanted to infuse a sense of avant-garde elegance into the Beetlejuice packaging. I also pulled from the iconic whacky proportions and bold stripes of Beetlejuice, merging these elements into a visually arresting design. The result is a collaboration that balances Owens’ dark, architectural aesthetic with a playful, cinematic twist.
Reel to Real
To fully immerse myself in the design process for the Beetlejuice packaging, I rewatched the original film to capture its essence and energy. This deep dive allowed me to identify key visual motifs, which I then translated into bold, unconventional design elements. The process was a blend of sketching, experimenting with proportions, and layering textures to create packaging that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
The color process initially went in two distinct directions: one that was vibrant and playful, drawing heavily from Beetlejuice’s iconic striped tuxedo, and another that was more muted, channeling Rick Owens’ dark, moody aesthetic. Ultimately, the color design was pulled back, favoring a more subdued palette to reflect Owens’ signature style, while still retaining subtle nods to Beetlejuice.
Eerie Elegance
The end result is a packaging design that seamlessly blends the whimsical essence of Beetlejuice with the dark, refined aesthetic of Rick Owens. The design features hidden Easter eggs for Beetlejuice fans, tucked within the details, alongside luxurious production techniques like UV gloss, debossing, and overprinting that elevate the overall look. This fusion creates a design that is both a tribute to pop culture and a statement of high-fashion artistry.
Eternal Icons
This Beetlejuice packaging collaboration involving Rick Owens pays homage to the film’s eccentric charm while embracing the avant-garde spirit of high fashion. In memory of Glenn Shadix and Sylvia Sidney, who brought Otho and Juno to life, this project honors the enduring legacy of Beetlejuice and the characters who made it iconic.
