Maison Margiela
A global luxury packaging program developed around Maison Margiela’s evolving creative direction. IDP Direct engineered paper bags and rigid boxes with custom textured papers, tactile finishes, bespoke handles, and recycled-content materials for consistent global production.
Project Overview
Maison Margiela approached its packaging as an extension of the brand: restrained at first glance, but defined by material, texture, and unexpected details. IDP Direct worked with the creative team to translate that direction across paper shopping bags, rigid boxes, handles, finishes, and limited-edition packaging.
Turning a Creative Direction Into a System
The challenge was consistency. Papers, colors, textures, handles, embossing, and foil details needed to feel like one packaging language across different formats and production runs. IDP engineered those details for repeatable manufacturing while incorporating recycled-content materials where appropriate.

All-over Textured Paper
Rather than relying on print alone, texture became part of Maison Margiela's packaging identity. IDP developed and controlled the paper surface across bags and boxes so the same tactile language could carry through different packaging formats.
Custom Handles
The deliberately raw textile handle looks simple, but consistency depends on material, width, fraying, attachment, and hand feel. IDP engineered the handle as part of the packaging, not as an off-the-shelf component added at the end.

Mono-Material Garment Bags
We engineered Maison Margiela's cotton garment bags without zippers, buttons, or mixed-material closures. Removing unnecessary components keeps the construction mono-material cotton while maintaining the protection and functionality the garment bag needs.
New Packaging Language
The limited-edition Tabi box began with a new creative direction. IDP developed the structure, materials, fabric wrapping, and interior presentation into a production-ready package designed to inform future limited-edition releases.

A new creative direction shouldn't end with one beautiful box. It should become a packaging language.
